An optics-ready firearm leaves the factory with a specific section of the slide already cut away. This cut is covered by a removable plate.Because you can swap out the adapter plates, you are not locked into one optic brand. If you want to change your red dot brand in two years, you just buy a different adapter plate.

If your handgun has a solid, standard metal slide, it must be milled or machined. You are locked into that specific optic “footprint.” For example, if your slide is machined for a Trijicon RMR, you cannot easily switch to an optic that uses a different mounting pattern later without buying a completely new slide.
